Thanksgiving

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Well, it’s that time of the year again.  Everyone is so busy.  With Thanksgiving here in a few days and Christmas in 4 weeks, oh my, we are busy. So let’s remind ourselves and others about the dangers of Thanksgiving for our wonderful pets.
Your pets do not know its “Thanksgiving” or any other holiday. But they do know that it’s party time. Lots of people, excitement, noise, food, beverages. People in and out. This could be very stressful for your dog or cat. Most cats will run off and hide somewhere. But dogs don’t. So to keep your precious friend safe while you have company, remember these key points. If your dog is relaxed and use to a house full of company, leave them out for a while but then you might want to place them in a separate room with their toys and bedding if possible alternating this every few hours. They will feel safer and less stressed. With folks going in and out of the door, this might be a perfect opportunity for your dog to master that great escape. Again if you think he might be thinking this, get them back to safety, back to his room again.  Make sure he has an ID tag with a contact phone number. If your dog is getting too overwhelmed, crating him might also be helpful, especially if he is use to being crated from time to time.  Don’t use it to punish him. You just want to protect him. The next thing is NEVER, NEVER give your dog leftovers from your dinner. Bones and fatty foods (especially rich holidays foods) can cause vomiting, diarrhea, intestinal blockage, & even pancreatitis.  Remove all garbage to a safer place. Like outside your dogs reach.  Remember the food on the counters is “Fair Game”. One of my labs loves to grab the bread package and rip it apart. Of course, there goes my bread.   NEVER give your dog any chocolate as it contains a chemical that is dangerous to both cats and dogs. Instead reward them with a special doggie treat made just for them.  The pet stores and big retail pet supply catalogs are loaded with these.

Make your holidays a safe and happy time for your pets. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone from all of us at Sunset Labradors.

It has been some time

Well, it’s been a long time since we have updated our blog, and with good reasons. Many of you are aware that Gary had his Hip Replacement Surgery on 9/17/08, which was a success. It has been a slow but steady recovery. We want to thank all those wonderful folks out there for remembering both Gary and me in your thoughts and prayers. We are finally getting back to normal now. We purposely skipped the autumn breeding because of the surgery. We have had several inquiries about puppies. And our waiting list continues to grow. We are anxiously waiting for our females to be bred. We are hoping for Becky X Rock and Ebby or Image X Remi. Right now, it appears, no one is in season. But we are hoping soon. As soon as we know we will post it on the website. Gary is redoing the web page so tune in often. We have lots of new ideas and photos to add to it.
