Doggie Doctor

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

All 7 puppies went to the veterinary today. They all received their first set of vaccines and health certificates. “Miracle” was a class act and was spoiled by everyone there. They all wanted to keep her. After the vet they spent most of the afternoon outside and how they enjoyed it.

Week 5 and all is well

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

At 5 weeks of age they are all eating well and growing like weeds. They are all very playful and crave for attention; which they are getting a lot of. Jammer is doing great and she has had enough of this mother thing. She still has an interest in her pups but she doesn’t want to stay with them very long. At this time Jammer will be retired and live a life of leisure at Sunset Labradors. All of our labs when they are retired stay with us for the rest of their lives. There are many breeders that are against this, they think that a lab that will no longer sire our give berth to puppies serve no purpose and are given away. Our theory is that they have earned the right to enjoy a retirement and they are a joy to have around with us. They all still live an active life and are very therapeutic with many of our friends and family members. As for “Miracle” she is doing great and is eating real well. She is as active as her brother’s and sister’s and is now ¾ their size. Next week we go to the doggie Dr. and then outside we all go.

First Feeding

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Well what a mess. We started feeding the puppies today and it went pretty well. Jammer has started to get a little nasty and is not producing enough milk for the puppy’s growth rate. So we started feeding them this morning and it all went well for the first time. Little “Miracle” led the way and she picked up on the new taste real fast. Included are 2 photos.

Week 4

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

The puppies are 4 weeks old today and all are doing well. They all are very aware of their surroundings and they are very active. Play time has started and their attempted barks are now low barks. Every day they look more and more like labs. Jammer is doing great but she has had about enough of this mother thing and has started to want more separation time. At about 4and1/2 weeks we start to feed them regular puppy chow. We grind it up real fine and soak it in hot water until it becomes mushy. The fun begins then: they walk in it, lay in it and roll around in it the first few feedings. The goal is to get one to eat and the rest will follow.

“Miracle” is doing very well, she now weights 18 ounces. She wiggles in and out of the rest and plays just like the rest of the bunch. She has been gaining weight every day looks better every day. She gets bounced all over and keeps coming back for more, outside of being small she has that lab look about her. She has come a long way since day 1. in 2 weeks they all go to our Veterinary for their check up and first set of shots and then we start getting them outside for more socialization. Every one at the vet’s office looks forward to seeing the puppies. The pups have also been dewormed twice at 2 weeks and at 4 weeks. Next blog post will be around Wednesday when we start feeding them.

Litter at 3 Weeks

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Week 3 and all are doing great. All the puppies’ eyes are open and blue in color. The color changes as they get older. Most people wish they would stay blue, but they don’t. All of them are walking around and they are very alert. They respond to our voice and they recognize Arlene and me when we are around. They are also starting their barking, they can be very loud at times. “Miracle” is doing very good; she has doubled in size and flops around with all of them. She has an amazing spirit and lucky that she does, there are a couple of big pups in this litter. “Jammer” is doing well and is eating very well. From week 3 to 4 is when the big change starts; they now start to become labs. From week 3 on is the most enjoyable time.
